How To Be Yourself
"To those of you who will begin, as I did, at an early age to be interested in creative effort, I have a word or two to say: Follow no one. Only you can lead yourself. Be open-minded and ready to reject every extraneous influence. Use your own. Talk is cheap; let others talk. Pay no attention to them or to me. Shun them and me with your self-discipline. Value your freedom from the shackles of the strait jacket. A rose is a rose regardless of its position on the bush. Approach your line of activity as an individual. Be independent. There is but one law to obey, the law of freedom: and obedience to that law is liberty."

Personal Vision
"Your photography is a record of your living--for anyone who really sees. You may see and be affected by other people's ways, you may even use them to find your own, but you will have eventually to free yourself of them. That is what Nietzche meant when he said, 'I have just read Schopenhauer, now I have to get rid of him.' He knew how insidious other people's ways could be, particularly those which have the forcefulness of profound experience, if you let them get between you and your own personal vision."

Watching Paint Dry
I was painting myoffice this afternoon, and looking in the 5 gallon drum of paint I noticed some curious patterns...and immediately put down the paint brush and picked up the camera. I think there is potential for some very interesting abstracts in this bucket; the four images on the New Work page are only scratching the surface. For some reason, they remind me of some of the abstract work that Wynn Bullock did.

Guasti is an interesting find, and I plan on making many visits back there. It's a small section of Ontario, between Ontario International Airport and the 10 Freeway. Many old buildings with a huge potential for spectacular images.

My web site, mattartz.com, has been down for a couple days and I don't know when it will be back up. My web site host, DirectNIC, is located in downtown New Orleans, and while thier building is still standing, they are trying to keep going on backup generators. The Process, Not the Product
"Getting photographs is not the most important thing. For me it's the act of photographing. It's enlightening, therapeutic and satisfying, because the very process forces me to connect with the world. When you make four-hour exposures in the middle of the night, you inevitably slow down and begin to observe and appreciate more what's going on around you. Waiting and Listening
"I seek out places where it can happen more readily, such as deserts or mountains or solitary areas, or by myself with a seashell, and while I'm there get into states of mind where I'm more open than usual. I'm waiting, I'm listening. I go to those places and get myself ready through meditation. Through being quiet and willing to wait, I can begin to see the inner man and the essence of the subject in front of me...Watching the way the current moves a blade of grass--sometimes I've seen that happen and it has just turned me inside out."

Sangiovese
My new favorite wine is Joseph Filippi Sangiovese. When I picked up my first bottle at the winery, I swear the woman who worked there was trying to talk me out of buying it. Well, maybe not that bad; but she was really qualifying it, saying things like "it's very earthy" and "it's an acquired taste". I thought, crap, this is going to suck; but not wanting to look like an idiot, bought it anyway. What a wonderful bottle of wine that was. My wife even liked it--actually loved it--and she's not a big fan of red wine.

Means to an End
"I start with no preconceived idea...discovery excites me to focus...then rediscovery through the lens...final form of presentation seen on ground glass, the finished print previsioned completely in every detail of texture, movement, proportion, before exposure...the shutter's release automatically and finally fixes my conception, allowing no after manipulation...the ultimate end, the print, is but a duplication of all that I saw and felt through my camera."

Photography and Commerce
"I create artwork because I love to. I sell artwork so I can make room for more I am now creating. Life without Thinking
"One does not think during creative work, any more than one thinks when driving a car. But one has a background of years--learning, unlearning, success, failure, dreaming, thinking, experience, all this--then the moment of creation, the focusing of all into the moment. So I can make 'without thought,' fifteen carefully considered negatives, one every fifteen minutes, given material with as many possibilities. But there is all the eyes have seen in this life to influence me."

The Mind Goes Blank
"The state of mind of a photographer while creating is a blank...For those who would equate 'blank' with a kind of static emptiness, I must explain that this is a special kind of blank. It is a very active state of mind really, a very receptive state of mind, ready at an instant to grasp an image, yet with no image pre-formed in it at any time. We should note that the lack of a pre-formed pattern or preconceived idea of how anything ought to look is essential to this blank condition. Such a state of mind is not unlike a sheet of film itself--seemingly inert, yet so sensitive that a fraction of a second's exposure conceives a life in it. (Not just life, but *a* life)."

Travels with Charlie
Imagine a woman living in a third world country, 100, maybe 150 years ago. Mired in a life of poverty, she never left her country, let alone her small rural village. She dreamed of seeing the wonders of the world beyond her village, and specifically of moving to America, where she heard that the streets are paved with gold and money grows on trees. Like so many millions of people around the world, when she died, she was quickly forgotten. Before long, her skull was extracated from the makeshift graveyard and sold to a dealer, who sold it to another dealer in the U.S. Ironically, only long after her death does she realize her dream of travelling to America. Eventually, her skull is purchased by a photographer. He names her "Charlie", and decides to make her the subject of his next project.
Forgive me, John Steinbeck.

Weed
A couple months ago, I pulled this weed up from between the stepping stones in my side yard and threw it in the dirt planter. A few days later, I noticed it had turned from green to light brown. Because it had grown between stepping stones, it was very flat. I looked at it and thought, "I need to take that inside and photograph it." For the next two months, I looked at it almost daily while watering my vegetable garden and thought, "I REALLY need to take that inside and photograph it." Tonight, I finally did it.
