It's Not About Equipment

"People ask me what kind of lens I have. I don't know, and I don't really care, as long as there are no cracks in it. I don't want to think about my equipment. It would be a hindrance."

"The music is not in the piano..."

"A remarkable number of artists, scientists, philosophers are quite dull outside of their specialty (and one suspects within it as well). The first siren's song we need to be wary of is the one that promises a connection between an interesting pursuit and interesting thoughts. The music is not in the piano, and it is possible to graduate from Juilliard without finding or feeling it."

Travels with Charlie: New Images

Charlie visited Gallery 57 Underground with me a few days ago, to take a look at the new 3 Visions show, and I took eight photographs of her enjoying the show and the gallery.

New Work: Wisconsin, Los Angeles, Guasti

The following images have been added to the New Work page:

- 12 from my recent trip to Madison, Wisconsin
- 8 from a visit to downtown Los Angeles last month
- 12 from my most recent discovery: Guasti

Guasti is an interesting find, and I plan on making many visits back there. It's a small section of Ontario, between Ontario International Airport and the 10 Freeway. Many old buildings with a huge potential for spectacular images.

Sitting and Waiting

Creating Your Own World

"The majority of the learned live in their own darkness, seeking only for the fruits that others have gathered; but true genius is a magician who creates a world for himself and for others, and his light expands as he grows in perfection."

Web Site Back Up!!!

The guys at DirectNIC in New Orleans got a fuel delivery today and managed to get my web site back up and running! To the guys at DirectNIC: You guys are AWESOME!!!!

Web Site Down

My web site, mattartz.com, has been down for a couple days and I don't know when it will be back up. My web site host, DirectNIC, is located in downtown New Orleans, and while thier building is still standing, they are trying to keep going on backup generators. You can follow the trials and tribulations of DirectNIC trying to keep their servers running in a city that's virtually destroyed and abandoned in their blog. Also, they've posted some pictures here and here.

When Technology Gets In The Way

"When I am out in the field photographing, I enter what for me is a 'sacred space.' By this, I mean that I do not want to be disturbed in the field by the technology of the camera. Rather, I want to feel free, open to the moment and absorbed by the beauty of the view in front of me. It's not about the camera, but about the moment."

Fame

"Most famous photographers work their entire life and produce tens of thousands of negatives and hundreds or perhaps thousands of prints but are remembered for less than ten and famous for just one."

-- Cherie Hiser
