"Ultimately success or failure in photographing people depends on the photographer's ability to understand his fellow man."

Nice Article in the Redlands Daily Facts
There was a really nice feature story in the Redlands Daily Facts yesterday, about Jerry Day and myself participating in the Shutter Magic show. Unfortunately they have not posted the article on their web site yet, and I can't scan the article just now...

Innocence

"Innocence of eye has a quality of its own. It means to see as a child sees, with freshness and acknowledgment of the wonder; it also means to see as an adult sees who has gone full circle and once again sees as a child--with freshness, and an even deeper sense of wonder."

The Social Significance of Landscapes

"It seems so utterly naive that landscape--not that of the pictorial school--is not considered of 'social significance' when it has a far more important bearing on the human race of a given locale than excrescences called cities."

Turning Up

"Life is about turning up. The more you get yourself out there, whether you wake up at 5:00 a.m. to pouring rain or not, the more you're likely to experience the wonderful happenings that are going on all around you. Sometimes the most interesting visual phenomena occur when you least expect it. Other times, you think you're getting something amazing and the photographs turn out to be boring and predictable. So I think that's why, a long time ago, I consciously tried to let go of artist's angst, and instead just hope for the best and enjoy it. I love the journey as much as the destination. If I wasn't a photographer, I'd still be a traveler."

Authenticity

"The fundamental belief in the authenticity of photographs explains why photographs of people no longer living and of vanished architecture are so melancholy."

Editing
"A photographer needs to be a good editor of negatives and prints! In fact, most of the prints I make are for my eyes only, and they are no good. I find the single most valuable tool in the darkroom is my trash can--that's where most of my prints end up."

Inspiration vs. Information
"Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask 'how,' while others of a more curious nature will ask 'why.' Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information."
